Native American Navajo Fine Etched Horsehair Wedding Vase with Turtles
The Wedding Vase is an ancient vessel that continues to be used in traditional Pueblo wedding ceremonies. Each spout represents one of the individuals to be married, while the looped handle symbolizes the unity achieved through marriage. The space within the loop signifies the circle of life. During the traditional ceremony, the couple drinks nectar, prepared by the medicine man, from the spouts, symbolizing the blending of their lives. This vase, etched with turtles encircling the piece, reflects this ancient rite. For many Native Americans, the earth is known as Turtle Island, and the turtle embodies the living spirit of Mother Earth. The turtle navigates both land and water through its deep connection with Mother Earth, symbolizing longevity and serving as a messenger to carry prayers to the earth. As a magical creature that never falls ill, the turtle brings health and luck. ^
