Native American-Made White Chin Dancer Katsina Doll
The White Chin (Tuma-uyi) is one of the most ancient Katsinam in Hopi tradition. Although he hasn’t been seen in performances for years, he used to appear in groups during dances. He also participated in the Powamuya ceremony but could be represented at any time. The name Tuma-uyi translates to “white chin,” likely referencing the white kaolin clay used to coat Katsina dolls before painting. Some believe he is responsible for maintaining the whitewash on the interior and exterior of homes. His main role is to bring rain, a purpose highlighted by his long black hair, similar to the Longhair Katsina. ^
