Native American-Made Cactus Katsina Doll
Prickly Pear Fruit (Yung’a, Yunya, or Nawuk’china) is a Katsina figure that emerged just before the 20th century. Historically, he was only occasionally personified on First Mesa, becoming more commonly represented through dolls rather than dances. On Third Mesa, his role was to oversee the cleaning of the springs, while on First Mesa, he primarily appeared in the Soyohim. He is distinguished by his unique headdress adorned with Prickly Pear fruit paddles. This piece is a remarkable example of a rare and traditional style, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The detailed carving, painting, and action are impressively accurate, reflecting a level of artistry that few contemporary Native American doll makers achieve. ^
