This Hopi wicker plaque is given as a gift at ceremonies. These baskets are made by plaiting sumac, natural and dyed, to achieve many designs. Many of the Hopi wickers, coils, and sifters are used for social or ceremonial purposes. This particular piece features an eagle. Eagles occupy a rather unique position among the Hopi, for they are treated as honored guests and are given presents just as the Hopi children are. Eagle is the messenger between the people and their spirit guides.
