Trail markers are fascinating historical artifacts, no longer in active use. They were once employed by clans or families to mark trails, indicating directions to ceremonies, meetings, or clan members’ homes. The colors on a trail marker represent clan colors, while deer antlers symbolize family and gentleness. A medicine wheel between the antlers is believed to protect the family from harm and misfortune. Skulls used in the markers hold specific meanings for Native people. Feathers signify a connection with prayer and protection, carrying dreams and prayers to safeguard the family. The spearhead at the bottom of a trail marker was used to secure it into the ground. In mountainous regions, markers without spearheads were hung from trees or placed by boulders using ropes or straps. ^
