Native American-Made Spruce Owl Warrior Katsina Doll

The Owl (Mongwu) is the leader of the warrior Katsinam and plays a key role in the summer dances by bringing the whippers. He is responsible for disciplining the clowns for their non-Hopi behavior. Mongwu appears in multiple ceremonies across various Mesas, including the Mixed Katsina Dance and other traditional dances. At First Mesa, he participates in the Bean Dance (Powamuya) and the Water Serpent ceremony. Regarded as a sorcerer, this figure is crafted in a distinctive style that is rare today, with very few artists creating Native American dolls in this manner. The piece is noted for its dynamic action, precise carving, and meticulous painting and detailing. ^
